Dark images with high contrast have their place, but that's not when you’re trying to sell a home. Colors need to be realistic and images need to be crisp and clear so when customers arrive they are not surprised. That’s where flambient comes in.
Flambient (flash ambient) photography combines a regular photograph with multiple flash images to create an image that has realistic color and less dark areas in the image. When done correctly rooms appear evenly lit, dark hallways become brighter and your property looks far more appealing.
The following example is a beautiful formal dining room. The issue with this shot is photographing directly into into the bright window. This creates extreme shadows and dark surfaces on the furniture and walls. In addition the walls are painted multiple colors and the chandelier has warm light bulbs installed for atmosphere. These issues can be overcome by using by combining a flash with the ambient light of the room.
In this next example we have the sunlight coming through a window off the left side of the image, blue walls, a light cream colored ceiling, wood door and shelves and the dark shadows being cast by the shelves. Using flambient we are able bring out the correct color of the walls, ceiling, wood door, wood shelves and eliminate the heavy shadows from the shelves and the pillow on the bed. We still retain some natural shadows to provide a realistic look.
If your property has these issues flambient is something to consider.
In HDR vs Flambient, HDR does have some advantages.
The foremost is probably cost. HDR images take less time for a photographer to process, it is quick and easy.
The second advantage of HDR vs Flambient is the amount of time spent on location. If you or your client have time constraints, HDR photography takes less time for a real estate photographer to shoot. This translates to you not having to stay on site as long and your client being able to get on with their day sooner.
If we are photographing a high end property, a property with a lot of windows creating shadows and dark spots in rooms or if there are walls with strong or deep colors, Elevation Photography recommends using flambient photography to make these places look their best.
